Banff Converts Streetlights to LED Light Fixtures, Reduce Energy Consumption
Even small Canadian towns are finding that they can’t afford NOT to start converting to LED lighting technology. Banff, a small town in a UNESCO World Heritage Center National park, is working with OSRAM (read more about OSRAM in this blog) to convert its city street lights to LED fixtures. So far eight streetlights have been transferred to LED lighting and the city has already seen a 36% reduction in energy consumption. For a small town budget, that is incredibly significant.
Banff is a unique township where only people that work there can live their in order to prevent uncontrolled growth in an area being preserved for its natural beauty. So far the lights in the Town Hall Square have been changed to LED fixtures. More are expected to transition over the next year.
In addition to the expected reasons for converting their streetlights to LED light fixtures – longer lasting lamps, lower maintenance costs, and lower energy consumption – Banff has also moved over to LED fixtures because OSRAM was able to design the lens such that the light only shines on the street and not on the surrounding night sky. The LED lights also do not attract flies and bugs the way standard street lamps do.
