Anchorage Partners with Cree to become LED City

Anchorage, by Frank K. at Flickr. The city of Anchorage will partner with Cree, a solid-state lighting industry leader, to become the next LED City. Anchorage Mayor Mark Begich announced the partnership today, saying that he was “pleased to announce the appropriation of $2.2 million to enable the city to purchase LED fixtures to change out roughly one-quarter of Anchorage’s streetlights.” In all, the city will replace 16,000 roadway lights with LED fixtures. Municipal lighting is especially crucial in Anchorage, where “approximately 85 days a year see less than eight hours of daylight,” according to Deb Lovig, manager for Cree’s LED City Initiative program. Switching to the LED lights is expected to result in $360,000 in annual savings for the city, since the LED bulbs require less energy and last 7 times longer than their predecessors.
