3.5 Million LED light bulbs to Illuminate Germany

Leverkusen, the Bayer headquarter high-rise, will not be demolished, it will be illuminated with over 3.5 million LED light bulbs.

The 122-meter building will be gutted this summer and converted to a media sculpture that will be visible for miles around. The facade will be used to communicate marketing messages for the chemical and health care company. Bayer plans that the building will be ready in spring 2009. You can view a video of what the company envisions the building will look like at http://www.bayer.com/en/News-Detail.aspx?id=9844

Bayer’s Board of Directors hopes that this conversion will positively showcase Bayer’s innovative and progressive thinking in health care research.  By using LED lights, the company will be able to change the message as it feels necessary, from photos, to announcements to the company’s traditional logo. The electricity needed to illuminate the building will be generated by an environmentally friendly solar collector specifically designed for this project.

This is not the first time that the Leverkusen building has made headlines. In 1999, the building was wrapped to look like a giant Aspirin pack to celebrate the 100 year birthday of the product. Interestingly enough, the building was entered into the Guinness Book of World Records for being the largest package.

This writer is speechless.
