Fishing, Hunting Are Up in Oregon

Coast Fishing ForcepsSo far this year, Oregonian’s have spoken loud and clear – “We will continue to fish!” The ODFW has recorded an 18% increase in the number of fishing licenses sold this year compared to last. Despite whatever economic woes the state is seeing, the reasons we love Oregon are still the reasons that will get us out spending and sporting.

Search & Rescue Finds Lost Hikers Near Salmon River

hiking-safetyTwo hikers in their 50s lost near the Salmon River were found by two younger hikers on Wednesday, May 28, 2009. The lost hikers were disoriented but uninjured after being out in the woods without food for two days. The one of the two young hikers who found the middle-aged couple went to the Zigzag Ranger Station to call search and rescue. So far not much else is know about how the couple got lost.

Pack It In, Pack It Out: Growing Trend in Outdoor Garbage Disposal

Hiking-Survival-SchoolA recent article in the paper on Seattle’s move away from trash cans caught my attention not because I necessarily thought it unusual, but mostly because I hoped it would actually work. The Seattle Parks Department is removing garbage cans to trim the budget for garbage collection throughout the city. The city hopes that the removal of the trash cans will prompt park visitors to take their trash home when they leave (as opposed to force people to throw their litter in the streets). For me, it seems that removing more than 750 trash cans from locations around the city could deter people from using the picnic and BBQ areas created for city residents. I guess I don’t have a lot of confidence that people will bring their own trash bags to haul their lunch items away everyday.

Memorial Day Camping: Maybe Not This Year

Oregon Camping Memorial Day has been the traditional kick-off weekend for summer camping. The gateway to a summer of hiking, swimming, boating and a general feeling of outdoor ease and comfort, the weekend is a welcome introduction to all the outdoors has to offer. So much in fact, that many are finding that area camping sites are already reserved.

Hiker, 90, survives Columbia River Gorge Fall

Chalk this up in the miracle column. Carroll Dubuar, a 90 year old man from Portland, survived a 60 foot fall down an embankment in the Columbia River Gorge this Wednesday. The Sheriff’s department stated that Dubuar lost his footing while hiking around Elowah Falls with his friends. Rescue crews had to use ropes to get to Dubuar who was taken to the hospital but who was expected to be fine. He was an avid hiker who has been hitting the trails with his friends for 30 years.
