Japan Funds OLED Research by Sony and Others

The Japanese government is hoping to spur improvements in OLED technology (and perhaps spur their own high-tech economic standing) by funding Sony, Sharp, and other companies in developing OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) techology. Sony spokesman Chisato Kitsukawa recently told the Associated Press that reported Sony is eager to develop manufacturing relationships to support the production of OLED screens. The group of companies aim to create a 40-inch OLED display around 2015. Sony introduced the first commercially available OLED display last year, with an eleven inch display, a mere three-millimeter thickness–and a pricetag comprable to 10 LCD displays.

New Chipotle in Mall of America Lit by LEDs

Chipotle in Las Vegas.  Credit:  Shane AdamsAs reported by theMinneapolis-St. Paul Star-Tribune,the newest Chipotle store, opened today in the Mall of America, is lit by LEDs. The restaurant’s LED bulbs were designed by LED manufacturer Eco-Story to match Chipotle’s distinctive 50 watt incandescent bulbs. A Denver Chipotle restaurant that was retrofitted with such bulbs expects to save $900 to $1000 each year on electricity.

Arkansas: Nation’s Largest Amateur Bass Fishing Tournament Begins Tomorrow

Hybrid bass catch, photographed by Belinda Hankins MillerThe Big Bass Bonanza, the largest amateur bass fishing tournament in the nation, begins tomorrow along 300 miles of the the Arkansas River, from Fort Smith to Dumas. High river conditions in late June forced officials to move the tournament five weeks ahead, to this weekend. The angler who catches the largest largemouth, smallmouth or Kentucky spotted bass will take home the competition’s $100,000 top prize.
