Washington: Volunteers needed to Staff Elk Hunting Lands

Weyerhaeuser Co. is asking for volunteers to help staff elk hunting areas near Mt. St. Helens. Volunteers are needed to orient hunters, maintain monitor access points, and establish safety buffers between hunting parties. Provided that a sufficient number of volunteers are found, Weyerhaeueser will allow hunters to use private logging roads in their Mt. St. Helens tree farm. This is the second year the logging company has linked hunters’ access to the availability of volunteers; last year 54 people volunteered.

Nevada: Galenda Creek Park Trail Building Day

Hiking_StaycationNevada residents - Are you looking for a good staycation idea for your family this weekend? Local young people are looking for volunteers to work on a new one mile trail at Galena Creek Regional Park off of Mt. Rose Highway. This August 2 from 8:00am - 12:00pm, volunteers will work with Great Basin Institute’s Great Basin Naturalists program high school students to help clear trailways. Lunch will be provided. Interested individuals, couples or families that want to volunteer can contact Kyle Isacksen at (775) 240-5967.

Michigian Businesses opt to Install LED bulbs

Southeast Michigan’s Metromode reports today that some local business owners are cutting energy costs by installing LED bulbs. Jerry Belanger, owner of the Park Bar in Detroit, reports that he paid for the LED bulb’s higher cost in just four months of lower energy bills. The Motor City Casino in Ann Arbor is also listed as being entirely lit by LEDs.

Anchorage Partners with Cree to become LED City

Anchorage, by Frank K. at Flickr.The city of Anchorage will partner with Cree, a solid-state lighting industry leader, to become the next LED City. Anchorage Mayor Mark Begich announced the partnership today, saying that he was “pleased to announce the appropriation of $2.2 million to enable the city to purchase LED fixtures to change out roughly one-quarter of Anchorage’s streetlights.” In all, the city will replace 16,000 roadway lights with LED fixtures. Municipal lighting is especially crucial in Anchorage, where “approximately 85 days a year see less than eight hours of daylight,” according to Deb Lovig, manager for Cree’s LED City Initiative program. Switching to the LED lights is expected to result in $360,000 in annual savings for the city, since the LED bulbs require less energy and last 7 times longer than their predecessors.

Trafalgar Square Will Sport LEDs for the 2012 Olympics

Trafalgar Square Fountain, by David SimLondon’s mayor announced plans today to renovate  Trafalgar Square in anticipation of the 2012 Summer Olympic Games. The square’s two fountains will be cleaned and repaired by experts. Additionally, the mayor announced plans to replace the fountain’s outdated lights with LED bulbs. The switch to LEDs is expected to reduce the fountains’ carbon footprints by 90%, saving 14,600 kg of carbon annually.
