New Book Offers Backpacking Tips from Canadian Naturalist

As originally reported by the Canadian Herald, Canadian backpacking expert Ben Gadd has been hiking the northern back country for over forty years. His hard-earned pearls of wisdom are now yours for the reading in his new book The Canadian Hiker’s and Backpacker’s Handbook: Your How-to Guide for Hitting the Trails, Coast to Coast. The first half of the book is dedicated to an activity that many people never stop to consider: walking. This makes sense: backpacking requires hours of hiking, so a correct walking technique can make or break a trip through the back country.

Viva LightFair 2008

LightFair 2007LightFair 2008 took place last week in what could be considered America’s City of Lights: Las Vegas. Billing itself as the “premier annual lighting industry trade show and conference for architectural and commercial lighting products and services,” LightFair 2008 offered workshops, the unveiling of new lighting products, and keynote addresses from industry leaders. The opening key note speaker for this year’s conference was Dr. David Irvine Halliday, director of the Light Up the World Foundation, a non-profit group dedicated to improving the lives of the world’s poor through solid state lighting.

Oregon: West Salish Pond Youth Fishing Event

Young fishermen and women are invited to learn to fish like the pros at the West Salish Pond Free Youth Fish Event on Saturday, May 31st from 9am – 2pm. The event is part of the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife‘s Youth Angling Enhancement Program, a service created to introduce kids to the world of fishing. The ODFW will provide rods, reels, bait and tackle for any young angler that does not have their own fishing equipment. The pond will be well stocked with trout so that the kids are sure to have a good time and volunteers will be on hand to teach safety as well as basic casting and baiting techniques.

Dusseldorf, Germany installs LED street lamps

Gas street lamp in Melbourne, AUAs reported in The Economist, Dusseldorf Germany is trading its old gas street lamps for LEDs. The process of updating the city’s lighting won’t happen overnight: about two dozen experimental LED street lamps are now installed, out of the ten thousand lamps the city intends to replace. City officials chose LEDs for their efficiency, reliability, and tendency to outlast traditional incandescent bulbs. Additionally, the light cast by LEDs is more directional, meaning that LED lamps can light just the area needed, as a spotlight would.
