Mount Rushmore National Memorial Backcountry Hiking Trail

There is still time to get your comments in on the backcountry hiking trail being proposed for the Mount Rushmore National Memorial. The public is encouraged to post their comments on the National Park’s Service’ plan at http://parkplanning.nps.gov. The park is conducting environmental assessments of the proposed trailway as part of the planning process. Hikers interested in knowing more about the plans can find routes and trailway maps on the site as well. Comments will be accepted until EOD April 30.

North Carolina Converting Highway to Trailway

County officials in North Carolina along with the state’s Department of Transportation have agreed to convert the old US Highway 70 to a hiking and biking trail. The roadway runs from Old Fort to Ridgecrest, crossing over the Old Fort Mountain.

Michigan Considers Banning Incandescent Bulbs By 2012

The end of lightbulbs as we know themThe government encourages conservancy through gas mileage requirements. Why not do the same for lighting technology? This is the question before the Michigan legislature. Michigan’s legislators are considering phasing out incandescent bulbs by the year 2012, two years earlier than current federal requirements. Democratic Senator John Gleason sponsored the bill, arguing that switching to LED and CFL bulbs is a “small sacrifice” that could save money in the long run.

Cree Starts LED University To Aid LED Adoption, Price Reduction

Cree has brought together five universities from around the world as part of their newly launched LED University Program. The program was developed to further the evaluation and wide-spread use of LED lights.
