Nashville Considers Replacing Hot Park Lights with LEDs

We all know that good lighting improves safety. What may not be as obvious is that poor lighting can directly cause injury, especially when traditional incandescent bulbs become extremely hot. This is exactly the danger at Bicentennial Mall State Park in downtown Nashville. State leaders are seeking for to replace the park’s 200 ground lights, similar to the one shown at left, after a small child suffered second degree burns after falling on one of the lights. City officials are hoping to replace the lights with LED bulbs, which create virtually no heat.

General Electric Developing OLED Wallpaper

Metalab LED CeilingIn his seminal novel Farenheit 451, Ray Bradbury envisioned a future in which televisions stretched from ceiling to floor, encompassing entire walls. According to a recent story at DVICE, that future may have arrived for lighting. General Electric researchers recently discovered a new process for creating OLEDs that may allow the manufacture of paper-thin lighting that can easily be placed anywhere. The ultimate dream of these designers is that the OLEDs would be flexible and available in any color. They could even be transparent, allowing installation on windows.

Oregon Fishing Season Still Icy

Saturday, April 26 was the official start of fishing season in Oregon. It, however, was lackluster at best. The longer than expected Winter has meant that the state’s mountain lakes and streams have not filled with the season’s run-off. Water levels are low and fishing conditions are less than ideal.

The Year of LED May Be Now

Lighting Science Group has announced they plan to distribute LED light bulbs to major retailers that can be an instant replacement to any regular CFL lamp or light fixture in the home or office. The company hopes that the wide-variety of bulbs in this new deal will attract more consumers to purchase them as a greener solution.

Tacoma Narrows Bridge To Be Lit with LEDs

Tacoma Narrows Bridge from the topThe News Tribune of Tacoma, Washington reports today that volunteers at NarrowsBridgeLights.org are waiting to be approved for non-profit status before outfitting the new Tacoma Narrows Bridge with 8-foot LED tubes hung every 40 feet across the bridge. Reporter Kathleen Merryman writes, “The low-energy lights can be programmed to display any color the eye can see.” The group plans to use a $1.5 million state grant to fund the project. The lights will be powered through solar arrays hooked into the electrical grid.
