Florida may be well known for its sunshine, but its recent black out left millions without artificial light. A minor fire broke out in an electrical substation on the outskirts of Miami. A breaker the station down, just as it should have done. Unfortunately, it shut down a dozen other functional substations as well. Power demand soon overloaded the system, and three million Floridians suddenly found themselves without power. Many left work early, only to get hopelessly stuck in traffic, since many of Miami’s traffic lights were out as well.

Sometimes, technology moves faster than the human mind can readily accept. I recently experienced this while chatting over drinks. One of my friends (who happens to be in medical school) was playing around with the candle at our table, covering it with her hand and noticing how the light changed. Only about halfway through the evening did she notice that she wasn’t feeling any heat. Usually, this kind of candle-play would have burned her hand. Not only was she not getting burned, she wasn’t feeling heat at all.
A modern wedding planning checklist might read something like this: Flowers. Check. Table Centerpieces. Check. Tux Rental. Check. Elegant, interesting, yet cost-efficient lighting.
