The Strange Origins of the Bowie Knife

Tuesday, January 29th, 2008

Considering the fact that Jim Bowie was known for his short temper it should come as no surprise that he was prone to carrying a knife. But, while many are familiar with Jim Bowie’s association with the knife that bears his name, most are not familiar with how the legendary Alamo fighter first began his association with the famous knife.  It all started long before Bowie became a famous adventurer and actually began when he was an applicant for a loan. During a local election, Bowie supported the opposition to a Sheriff named Norris Wright. Unfortunately for Bowie, Wright also worked in a bank and when a loan application Bowie submitted crossed his desk, Wright stamped a huge “rejection” on the application. Later, the two would have a verbal and physical confrontation in which Wright would pull a gun on Bowie. Bowie, more angered than scared, lunged at Wright and attempted to strangle him. (It is amazing Bowie wasn’t shot during this confrontation) The fight was broken up and Bowie later resigned himself to carrying a large knife as protection.

A Mobile Reading LED Light Makes Travel Easier, Safer

Monday, January 28th, 2008

When your family is driving on a dark road and you need to read a map or printed directions, having an easy to turn on light that is bright without being blinding is very important. You want the person in the car reading the map to be able to turn on a good reading light very easily so that the driver won’t need to take their eyes off the road.  For these road trips, affixing a mobile reading LED light in the car may be a smart option. This mini light is small, portable, takes AAA batteries and clicks on easily.  A good mobile light should also have alternate power capabilities, like car or cigarette light adaptors.  This will ensure that your light will work for a long time under multiple power sources.  It can be attached to a book, map, sun visor or children’s toys in the back seat for a bright, clean light anywhere you need it.

Arkansas Sharpening Stones

Sunday, January 27th, 2008

A knife is a useless piece of metal if it is not clean and sharp.  When a quality knife becomes dull, appropriate measures need to be taken to improve the usability and functionality of the blade. A sharpening stone is the most useful and respected way to sharpen a solid, stainless steel knife. Virtually all stones operate in the same manner – the stone cuts metal off the edge of the knife so as to make the knife sharp again. But, not all stones are identical. The most popular of all knife sharpening stones is the tried and true Arkansas stone. There are hard and soft Arkansas stones – the difference strengths provide either fine or coarse grits when sharpening the knife. This correlates with how dull the knife is and how much sharpening needs to be done.  Arkansas stones are the universal sharpening stones because they can handle any type of knife and easily sharpen any type of blade. They are a must have knife accessory for any hunter or outdoors person.

Understanding How LED Lighting Can Save You Money

Thursday, January 17th, 2008

Many business owners out there may be considering the transition from traditional fluorescent lighting in your home, store, building or office to LED lighting but are concerned about the price.  Will you actually save money in the long-run if you switch to an LED solution?  What if something goes wrong? What if you want to make changes to your lighting scheme or design in a few years?  During a panel discussing the future of LED as a viable lighting solution for the future, an analogy of the cost relationship between LED solutions and a traditional fluorescent solution was given (and published subsequently in the Quintessence), one that I think many of you may find helpful.  As Karl Weinhold, Executive of KWL Lighting stated, “In order to calculate efficiency and service life you have to look at the system as a whole.”
