Osram LED Technology Nominated for Prestigious German Tech Award

Osram, together with the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Optics and Precision Engineering, has been nominated for the German Future Prize.  The team is one of four teams nominated for the award meant to celebrate outstanding technical, engineering and scientific achievements that prove to be both practical and marketable.  The winning technology should also create new jobs in its respective field and elsewhere.  The winner will be presented in December by Federal President Horst Köhler.

Autistic Boy Lost While Hiking Found

Just a quick note to let you all know that Jacob Allen, the teenager lost in the Monongahela National Forest on Sunday has been found after four days of searching. He has been reunited with his family and officials say that a news conference will be held this evening. No details on where he was found or his health condition were given.

Ann Arbor Next LED City

CNN reported today that Ann Arbor, Michigan will be the next city to promote energy-efficient lighting by replacing about 1,400 street lights with eco-friendly light-emitting diode – LED – bulbs. Ann Arbor joines Raleigh, NC and Toronto, Canada in the LED City initiative, both promoted in this blog (see “Raleigh, NC: LED City” and “Toronto becomes second LED City“. Ann Arbor will be the first national city to convert all of its downtown street lights to LED light bulbs. LED light sources use less than half the energy of traditional bulbs, last five times as long and are estimated to save a community like Ann Arbor about $100,000 per year

GE Restructuring To Better Compete in Lighting Industry

GE Consumer & Industrial is restructuring its lighting business to become more competitive and improve its position in the growing lighting industry market. The restructuring will impact plants in Mexico, Brazil and the USA. GE will also focus on investing in new lighting technologies and research that will help maintain its technology leadership.

Prudential LED Display Sign Lights up Hong Kong

The Prudential Insurance Company has launched a new giant LED sign at the top of its Tsim Sha Tsui location in Hong Kong. The 8m x 70m sign was built and installed by Retop LED Display Company and uses Nichia’s LED lights in its display screens. The sign is one of the most technologically advance with the ability to play hi-def videos, images, custom animations, and special broadcasts. Prudential believes that millions of Hong Kong residents and tourists will see the sign each year. LED technology’s advanced design capabilities and long-life make it ideal for sign designs like that of Prudential.
