The demonstration can be seen at the Flat Panel Display International 2007 Conference in Yokohama, Japan.  Currently, backlighting for large LCD televisions that use standard LEDs require hundreds of individual LED light sources (read more about LEDs in LCD TV technology here). This new backlighting unit uses only seven (Luminus) PhlatLight modules made up of a single red, green and blue chip, to illuminate the large LCD screen.  To accomplish this reduction in light sources, this demo couples the light of each module into a MicroLens light guide that spreads the light across the screen.
