Fishing Record Holds for 75 Years

Record breaking seems to be in the air this week (see blog on Catra Corbett). Outdoor Life ran a story in their newsletter today on George Washington Perry, the Georgia man that still holds the record for catching a 22 pound, 4 ounce largemouth bass using a single lure. Perry, then 20 years old, caught the fish on Montgomery Lake on June 2, 1932. This weekend will mark the 75 year anniversary of that feat, a record that has yet to be broken by any angler.

From Addiction to Athlete | Catra Corbett Strives to Break Hiking Record

Catra Corbett is not your typical middle-aged career girl. Sure, she is a nutritionalist at Whole Foods market, owns her home and car and enjoys the outdoors. But this 42 year old also has 22 piercings and over 100 tattoos.  Her brightly colored braided hair is a tell-tale sign of the ambition this woman possesses.

Hiking Week in Pennsylvania

It is hiking week in Pennsylvania with over 100 hikes scheduled and routed throughout the state.  The sixth annual nine-day Hiking Week is sponsored by the Keystone Trails Association and the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR).  Event organizers hope that the 107 hiking trails available will get local hiking enthusiasts as well as first-timers to visit the state and local parks and experience the woodlands these areas have to offer.

Hiker Attempts Grand Canyon Hike on 60th Birthday

Tom Gmitter didn’t get what he wanted for his birthday but he gave it his best shot.  The Brentwood man wished to mark his 60th birthday by completing a double crossing of the Grand Canyon within 24 hours.  Gmitter made it 13 hours, about 22 miles of the 44.5 mile hike, before his left knee became too painful to continue.
