Hike, Fish & Go Camping Punch Wins Travel Oregon Recognition

October 6th, 2008

Hike, Fish and Go Camping PunchThis may be a bit out of the ordinary from the usual blogs I write here at DLK but I saw this bit of news in the paper last week and couldn’t resist sharing it with you all. Travel Oregon, the state’s tourism commission, sponsored a contest to find the best “official” Oregon cocktail. The winning drink would combine quintessential Oregon items to create a tasty and satisfying cocktail. The winning drink - a “Hike, Fish & Go Camping Punch” created by southwest Portland resident Cheryl Meloy. Meloy works at Pendleton Woolen Mill and was able to beat out over 200 contestants for the honor. This “light and refreshing” drink combines some of Oregon’s best loved elements. A combination of huckleberries, Pendleton whiskey, and Terminal Gravity IPA are mixed with citrus to create a frothy, sweet drink that eems perfect for sitting around your back deck with friends. I haven’t tried out this new cocktail but am looking forward to trying it in the near future. The test will be whether you can really hike or fish successfully while drinking one.

Brookings, Oregon Dedicates Trail to WWII Event

October 5th, 2008

Japanese Bombing Site TrailMany Oregonians, and the majority of the rest of the world, don’t remember that nearly 66 years ago, a Japanese fighter pilot bombed the southern Oregon Coast near Brookings during World War II. On September 9, 1942, in the early hours of the morning, Nobuo Fujita, a Japanese pilot along with a submarine crew approached the Oregon coast aimed at starting forest fires in the U.S. that would distract the U.S. and its manpower during a critical junction in the war. Luckily, Oregon’s damp weather hampered the two bombs from doing much damage other than creating a large crater that remains there today.

Hunters Rely on Easy To Use Flashlights

September 30th, 2008

LED Lenser P17Hunters will all agree that an easy to carry, easy to operate flashlight is a must for deer, elk or bear season. Packing a heavy flashlight or fumbling around to adjust the light beam intensity are non-starters for an outdoorsman that is trying to be efficient and safe. LED Lenser tactical flashlights take this into consideration to create sleek, powerful and easy to operate hand-held lights for the serious hunter. These lights are built to withstand the kind of intense and sometimes harsh conditions placed upon flashlights used by firemen, search and rescue teams, and the military.
